The Gastroenterology Coding Professional: A Comprehensive Training Program

GI procedure coding is full of distinctions that matter: screening versus diagnostic services, how far the scope advanced, whether tissue was biopsied or removed, and which services are part of a larger endoscopic procedure. You cannot always answer those questions from the procedure title. This course gives experienced coders a closer look at upper and lower endoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, advanced techniques, motility testing, and office services. We will work through reports to identify the documented technique and extent of service, check CPT and multiple-endoscopy rules, and discuss how to handle missing or inconsistent details. We will also address diagnosis and pathology linkage within the provider's documented findings.

Webinar Objectives

  • Follow digestive tract, biliary, hepatic, and pancreatic anatomy in GI reports.
  • Distinguish diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy using documented technique and extent.
  • Recognize screening, surveillance, and diagnostic services and the related reporting questions.
  • Identify documented findings without making an independent clinical diagnosis.
  • Find the passages in procedure reports that support a proposed CPT code.
  • Distinguish separately reportable work from services already included in another code.
  • Use current CPT instructions, coding guidance and applicable edits to check code selection.
  • Recognize missing, unclear or conflicting details that could affect coding accuracy.
  • Know when a physician clarification is needed and when the existing record is sufficient.
  • Explain coding decisions clearly to providers and clinical staff using the documented work.
