The OB/GYN Coding Professional: A Comprehensive Training Program

OB/GYN coding moves between two very different worlds. Gynecologic procedures are coded one at a time by approach, structure and, for hysterectomy, uterine weight. Starting in 2027, obstetric care is coded phase by phase: antepartum and postpartum visits with E/M codes, new daily labor management codes, and separate delivery codes. Pregnancy diagnoses follow their own rules for trimester, weeks of gestation and the fetus affected. This course helps experienced coders follow the work described in OB/GYN records. We will cover office and preventive gynecology, antepartum, labor management and postpartum care under the CPT 2027 maternity codes, delivery, obstetric ultrasound and fetal testing, pregnancy loss and ectopic pregnancy, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and hysterectomy, pelvic floor and cervical procedures, and gynecologic oncology. Case reviews focus on documented work, CPT and NCCI Chapter VII rules, ICD-10-CM Chapter 15, and when a physician clarification is appropriate.

Webinar Objectives

  • 1. Follow female pelvic anatomy and the structure of gynecologic operative reports and prenatal records.
  • 2. Distinguish gynecologic procedure coding from phase-by-phase obstetric coding under CPT 2027.
  • 3. Apply ICD-10-CM Chapter 15 rules for trimester, weeks of gestation and the fetus affected.
  • 4. Recognize documented clinical indicators without making an independent clinical determination.
  • 5. Find the passages in procedure reports that support a proposed CPT code.
  • 6. Distinguish separately reportable work from services already included in another code.
  • 7. Use current CPT instructions, coding guidance and applicable edits to check code selection.
  • 8. Recognize missing, unclear or conflicting details that could affect coding accuracy.
  • 9. Know when a physician clarification is needed and when the existing record is sufficient.
  • 10. Explain coding decisions clearly to providers and clinical staff using the documented work.
