The Pain Management Coding Professional: A Comprehensive Training Program

Pain management coding often comes down to the level, side, target, guidance, and technique documented. These details matter for injections, blocks, ablations, and implanted devices, but they may be scattered throughout a procedure note rather than spelled out in its heading. This course takes experienced coders through common interventional pain procedures, from epidural injections and facet work to peripheral nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, and percutaneous spine procedures. We will examine what supports the reported service, when imaging is included or separately reportable, and how CPT instructions and applicable coverage policies affect coding. The coder's job remains grounded in the provider's documentation, not independent clinical interpretation.

Webinar Objectives

  • Recognize spinal, joint, and peripheral nerve anatomy described in procedure notes.
  • Follow documented levels, laterality, targets, technique, and image guidance.
  • Distinguish common injection, block, ablation, and implanted-device procedures.
  • Recognize documented clinical indicators without deciding medical necessity clinically.
  • Find the passages in procedure notes that support a proposed CPT code.
  • Distinguish separately reportable work from services already included in another code.
  • Use current CPT instructions, coding guidance and applicable edits to check code selection.
  • Recognize missing, unclear or conflicting details that could affect coding accuracy.
  • Know when a physician clarification is needed and when the existing record is sufficient.
  • Explain coding decisions clearly to providers and clinical staff using the documented work.
