The Pediatric Coding Professional: A Comprehensive Training Program

Pediatric coding brings together services that do not fit neatly into one workflow. A well-child visit may include screenings or a separately documented problem, while office E/M, vaccine administration, and newborn care each have different reporting rules. This course helps experienced coders work through those differences using pediatric documentation from the newborn period through adolescence. We will review E/M services, preventive visits, immunizations, inpatient and critical care, developmental and behavioral screening, office procedures, telehealth, and care management. The focus is on the services the provider actually documented, the applicable age-based and CPT requirements, and the difference between a documentation question and a code-selection question.

Webinar Objectives

  • Recognize age-based coding requirements and pediatric visit components.
  • Follow documented E/M work, preventive care, screenings, and vaccine administration.
  • Distinguish separately reportable services from those already included in the encounter.
  • Recognize documented developmental and clinical information without making clinical judgments.
  • Find the passages in pediatric visits and procedures that support a proposed CPT code.
  • Distinguish separately reportable work from services already included in another code.
  • Use current CPT instructions, coding guidance and applicable edits to check code selection.
  • Recognize missing, unclear or conflicting details that could affect coding accuracy.
  • Know when a physician clarification is needed and when the existing record is sufficient.
  • Explain coding decisions clearly to providers and clinical staff using the documented work.
