The Urology Coding Professional: A Comprehensive Training Program
In urology, code selection can depend on details that are easy to miss: which side was treated, where the scope traveled, whether a stone was fragmented or extracted, and what happened to a stent. The approach may also change from endoscopic to laparoscopic, robotic, or open surgery. We developed this course to help experienced coders read those reports with a better understanding of the procedures being described. Cases cover endourology, kidney and ureter surgery, bladder and prostate procedures, male genital and pelvic floor surgery, and office services. We will concentrate on finding documentation that supports a code, recognizing work that may be included, and knowing when to ask the physician for clarification.
Webinar Objectives
- Follow urinary tract and reproductive anatomy in urology operative documentation.
- Recognize the differences among endoscopic, laparoscopic, robotic, and open approaches.
- Identify documented side, site, scope work, stone treatment, and stent services.
- Recognize clinical details already documented without independently interpreting findings.
- Find the passages in operative reports that support a proposed CPT code.
- Distinguish separately reportable work from services already included in another code.
- Use current CPT instructions, coding guidance and applicable edits to check code selection.
- Recognize missing, unclear or conflicting details that could affect coding accuracy.
- Know when a physician clarification is needed and when the existing record is sufficient.
- Explain coding decisions clearly to providers and clinical staff using the documented work.
